A Rough Shaking edition by Georg MacDonald Literature Fiction eBooks

A special story with a unique message! Several insightful, and quotable observations on responsibility. MacDonald certainly lives up to the high estimation C. S. Lewis gave him. Lewis said that he hardly ever wrote anything without quoting George MacDonald. The story seems to start rather slowly, but gathers speed with the telling, and of course, a surprise ending!

A Rough Shaking edition by Georg MacDonald Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I love all of George Macdonald's books, including the unspoken sermons. This book tells a story about a boy named Clare. How I grew to love him as I read along. He seems to be the model of what the Lord is referring to when He says that we must become like little children to enter the kingdom of God. I was so moved and challenged. I also like the spiritual insights and truths the author put in throughout the story. I'll miss the animals --Nimrod, Abdiel, Pummy, and Panther.
"A Rough Shaking" reminded me a little of "Sir Gibbie," but without all the Scottish dialog. An orphan boy escapes to make his way in the world and eventually finds his way home. I liked this story because it's a story. MacDonald keeps to the point better than in some of his other books and doesn't meander off into sermons and spiritual conversation that have little bearing on anything, beyond perhaps making the reader think.
I really liked this book. Although it was at times a teeny bit moralistic for my tastes the essence of it was heartwarming and held some rich nuggets of wisdom
Although some reviewers found the language archaic, I did not. It is a comfort to read something written in a good style.
This is a book suitable for children with some potent messages for adults as well.
After an unsure start, eventually I read it twice!
Written in McDonald's style, which is unique to the era, this story immediately brought his famous fantasy classic "Phantastes" to mind. I have not finished it, but know that it will not disappoint.
I particularly liked this story because of all the animal stuff. Macdonald was the best ever at writing about animals, and this time, for the first time as far as I can tell (and I've read almost all of his works), he wrote about a feline--a puma (cougar). Of course he had a horse, and the dog story was absolutely wonderful. And there's a bull! But Macdonald didn't love cats the way I do (and C.S. Lewis did), so he never wrote about them. I know that's because he never got close enough to a cat, since they rarely show love to people they don't know and know well. But somehow he got to know a cougar!
I gave it four stars because it ended too abruptly, without enough explanation for my taste. What happened to that dog, and to the little girl, Ann, and...so on. Usually Macdonald wraps things up better, more thoroughly. He left some loose ends here. But it is a great plot--he's a masterful plotter--and the main character is so good to read about, so inspiring to see what we all should be and could be.
Another reason for four stars is that the main character suffered too much before he finally got his just rewards. I was wincing too often at what he went through even though I can always count on Macdonald to make it come right somehow, even if not the way you were hoping.
There is no Scots dialect here, so people who can't wade through that (I can wade) will not have a problem.
I'll never forget that puma or that dog or that bull, and I'm looking forward to reading the book again in a while.
phenomenal book. MacDonald is my favorite author. If you enjoy his work - you will love this book.
